Yes, I have noticed this just recently - especially in the field of contemporary art. Also an increasing number of publishers are not putting covers on their books at all, even though they are fuloly bound with boards. And other publishers are putting on what I am calling a "cheater" cover -- only a band that does not cover the entire board. In addition to this question, there are also an increasing number of publishers that are doing complete covers, but once the co ver is removed there is no identifying information on the cover of the book or the spine or the back of the book. One doesn't know what one has, unless the title page is seen. The public only sees a barcode in the upper left corner of the front cover and a call number on the lowet spine.

So are book jackets a dying artform considered unnessary due to cost and an increasing number of e-books and, thus, putting artists out of jobs?

Subject: [ARLIS-L] rant - books without covers

Dear ARLISians,

Has anyone else noticed the growing number of art books being published without book board OR paperback covers? They might come in a flimsy box, or be 'disguised' with a book jacket, but once the box or jacket is removed (as is our usual practice) the sewn binding and paper signatures are exposed and unprotected. What are publishers thinking, other than the obvious answer that they are economizing?
