This article is an excellent summary of the issue of appropriation in visual 
art so far.  Also--I wanted to mention that Virginia Rutledge, an art lawyer 
and former general counsel for Creative Commons (who is mentioned toward the 
end of this article) spoke here in Santa Fe recently and she is an 
attractive and articulate speaker that should be considered as an ARLIS 
conference speaker on the subject of copyright one of these days.
