I was curious about this, as I had not heard the term "participatory lbrarianship" before seeing it on this list.  There is a lib-guide:

Evidently this started in school libraries, and involves a lot that public libraries are already doing -- i.e., poem in your pocket day, VoiceThread, etc.  I found particularly interesting for academic libraries the little PollDaddy poll at the bottom of the page, which, if it's implemented so that it's ubiquitous and easy, could serve both "participatory" and statistics gathering purposes.

And yes, at the august library where I last worked (NYPL), collection development had already been grabbed out of the hands of Art Librarians. We had a peripheral "participatory" role in the grand Collection Development scheme, which revolved mostly around James Patterson (okay, that last bit is unfair, I take it back!)

But it's a very interesting topic, and perhaps can be at least partially shaped by Arlisians to suit our particular goals in our particular institutions, if we hop on it, explore it, and frame it correctly.

Hi Leslie -- You mentioned that UCSD reference is evolving towards a predominantly e service...  Can you tell us if their own librarians are handling e-reference, or if they've contracted with an outside service?  Also, is the UC's examination of participatory librarianship an institution-driven or library-driven decision?

To everyone on the list...  I'd be curious to know what other institutions are seriously considering, or opting for, participatory librarianship.  Is anyone else willing to share on this topic?

The U California library system is also looking at these same issues. Currently in place is system-wide chat reference, and at UCSD reference is definitely evolving towards a predominantly e service. As a selector, I do consider whether a book might be acquired as a e-book, but I too am often not satisfied with the quality of images, or in some cases the lack of images, so almost always opt to buy the print version. I still have the authority to make this choice, at least for now!
