Off the top of my head...

In regards to zines and minicomics, John Porcellino's "King Cat" comics are a great example. The original minicomics are difficult to find, but a collection was reprinted by Drawn & Quarterly: http://www.drawnandquarterly.com/shopCatalogLong.php?st=art&art=a41e32df425aef

Adrian Tomine's "Optic Nerve" comic also started as a minicomic; similar to Porcellino, the originals are going to be hard to track down, but they've also been reprinted.

Barnard College also has an impressive zine library and does some limited interlibrary lending. Jenna Freedman's put together really great resources on starting zine collections and how to find materials. (http://zines.barnard.edu/about-barnard-zines/access)

Hope this is helpful!

Hi Ray Anne,

Though it was not possible for me to narrow it down to just five, but here are some books and artists that would form a strong core for a graphic novel collection:

The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
Maus (collected volume) by Art Spiegelman
Jimmy Corrigan, The Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware
The Push Man and Other Stories by Yoshihiro Tatsumi
Epileptic by David B.
What is it by Lynda Barry
Exit Wounds by Rutu Modan
Wilson by Daniel Clowes
Cecil and Jordan in New York by Gabrielle Bell
My New York Diary by Julie Doucet
Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud

In terms of zines, I would recommend looking to the local artists and creators in your community. The Pittsburgh Zine Fair just passed in September but zine fairs are a great place to find material for your library. You could find some information and contacts on the PZF blog: http://pghzinefair.com/. There is quite a few zine distributors and collectives on the blog. If you contact them, they will be able to recommend a selection relevant to your needs. One particularly special publication based in Pittsburgh is Ker-Bloom!, a zine made entirely with letterpress techniques (can be purchased on Etsy). I also have a contact at the Pittsburgh Public Library who collects zines. I can send you her info off-list if you are interested.

Hello Colleagues,

I know these are “old” topics, but I want to purchase some highly selective examples of both for our Studio Arts program.  I know nothing about these publications.  I am hoping that some of you can suggest the top five all-time best artists or titles in these genres for me.  Thanks so very much, Ray Anne Lockard
