REFERENCE LIBRARIAN

 

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks a professional Reference Librarian for the Margaret R. and Robert M. Freeman Library, the largest specialized art library in the Southeast. The Reference Librarian has primary responsibility for all aspects of reference services provided by the library to museum staff and to the general public. Duties include scheduling and supervision of all wage and volunteer reference assistants and ensuring that courteous assistance and quality research service is provided to patrons in a timely manner. In addition the person in this position oversees the circulation, use, security and storage of collection materials and use of equipment.

 

As the first point of contact for the library, the Reference Librarian is expected to provide access to library collections and to establish and maintain positive relationships with library donors, museum staff and the visiting public. The Reference Librarian will provide orientation sessions and tours to staff, members and the public. Collection development responsibilities will include management of serial subscriptions and recommendation of current print titles and electronic resources. This position also has oversight of library operations and personnel in the absence of the Director of Library, Museum and Statewide Resources. Some weekend and evening work is required.   

 

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will have a Masters in Library and Information Science from an accredited program with an undergraduate or graduate degree in a related discipline such as art history or museum studies.  Experience providing reference assistance in a research library or academic environment is essential. Superior organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are also necessary. Additional requirements include a familiarity with integrated library systems, demonstrated proficiency using computer based technology, ability to adapt to new technologies and experience working in a rapidly changing digital environment.  A security background check will be required.
