Hi everyone, I’ve received a few requests for more details about how we use the “sticky notes” program in instruction.  Here’s a quick rundown (below).

I’ve enjoyed the discussion!

We have use Linoit for art history survey courses:

1) Post image in powerpoint of an artwork from the period being discussed in class - do some basic Visual Thinking Strategies stuff (ask:  What is happening in this picture?  What do you see? etc.)

2) Have students go into linoit and type up on sticky notes some of their questions about the object

3) Everyone looks at each other’s sticky notes on the screen together and you talk about why some questions are more effective

4) Show them an excerpt from Oxford Art Online about the artist, period, style, or something else related (in powerpoint). A student reads the passage and you prompt the class to identify key terms from the passage.  Work with students to identify what these are and highlight them in powerpoint slide.

5) Everyone develops new questions they have about the work based on (a) their visual reading of the work and (b) some background info they have from OAO. And they post these to the sticky notes as well - we cover the questions again...then we launch into finding sources.
