> Leigh,

> Just a little rain and 30-40 mph winds and gusts on Saturday in Durham, Leigh. The North Carolina coast got clobbered though. Since Irene was over North Carolina for over 12 hours and was so large, there was a lot of flooding and ground damage on the Outer Banks and coastal cities, with the rain and ocean surges into the coastal waterways. Houses and businesses are under 8 to 10 feet of water. Canals were sucked dry at one point during the hurricane then filled back up as the storm bands circled around so major damage there. Over half a million people were without power and they say it may take a week to get all power restored in the eastern part of the state. There is also significant crop damage or total loss east of the I-95 corridor and into the sandhills in the southern part of the state. Eastern Carolina University and the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort are closed (the lab had been evacuated before Irene made landfall). Parts of the highways on the Outer Banks are completely gone.

> At Duke we lost a giant willow oak in front of the building across from mine, and it hit part of it hit the building after completely uprooting. Other than that, just small tree limbs around campus. No flooding.
