----please excuse cross-postings---
Dear Colleagues,

The Moving Image Specialists in Libraries (MISL) project, a research
initiative out of NYU's program in Moving Image Archiving and
Preservation, is excited to announce the Discussion Forum on our website,
http://www.nyu.edu/tisch/preservation/research/libraries/about.html This
Forum will only be open for another month, so we urge you to contribute to
the discussion.

Sponsored by IMLS, the MISL project seeks to improve staffing and
preservation for moving image and sound collections in academic libraries,
and to facilitate dialogue and exchange of knowledge around these issues.
Our website serves as a central location to both collect and disseminate
information on the status of moving image and sound preservation experts
in libraries from the points of view of various stakeholders. Topics
include:
* the range of projects undertaken by library staff, fellows and interns
working on media projects in libraries, and the contexts in which they
     exist.
* the obstacles to initiating and maintaining media preservation
programs in libraries, and what facilitates their creation.
* education and training issues for media collections
* the substance and status of certification efforts in professional
societies such as AMIA and elsewhere, and their relationship to the
     needs of libraries.

Now we'd like to hear from you, our fellow colleagues and extended
community. Published on our site are:
* Interviews with librarians about moving image and sound collections and
    staff training issues.
* News and reports from MIAP fellows and student interns working in the
    field.
* Resources on media archiving and preservation.

We invite you to visit the website and respond by posting comments and
engaging in the discussion which will only be open for the next month.
What needs changing about the field of media preservation in libraries,
and what is working well? Your ideas and opinions will help foster and
expand the exchange of knowledge around these issues as well as the
proposed solutions. And the results will be presented to library Deans
and Directors, as well as to IMLS.

Please circulate this invitation to any of your colleagues who may be
interested. We look forward to reading your opinions in postings to our
website.

Sincerely,

Howard Besser <[log in to unmask]> and
Sarah Resnick <[log in to unmask]>
