I recently heard from my EBSCO rep about the merger with Wilson, and
asked to share it with the ARLIS membership.

> Subject: RE: Wilson clarification
>
> Hi Carol,
> Thank you very much for your patience. Wilson’s Art resources are
> the defining products, and a leading factor in EBSCO’s desire to
> have Wilson join our company. Our goal in the area of Art (and
> Wilson on the whole) really has three major components:
> 1.) Bring these defining indexes into EBSCOhost to enable a
> better overall experience for customers (this includes Art Index,
> Art Index Retrospective, Art Full Text, Art Museum Image Gallery and
> the Cinema Image Gallery) [NOTE: these join art resources already
> available via EBSCOhost, including: Art Abstracts, Art &
> Architecture Complete, and Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals]
> 2.) Continue to uphold and enhance the Wilson indexing in not
> only the Wilson databases, but also to leverage this high quality
> indexing in EBSCOhost databases
> 3.) Bring together the strengths of Wilson and the strengths of
> EBSCO by creating new, optional upgraded “super databases” [NOTE: in
> art, the super database will be called Art Source]
> Again, our goal is not to do away with these resources, rather it is
> to improve access to them through EBSCOhost. All of these
> resources, as well as existing EBSCOhost art databases (e.g., Art &
> Architecture Complete) will continue to be offered and enhanced. In
> fact, there are enhancements underway for the Cinema Image Gallery
> and the Art Museum Inage Gallery, even before these are brought into
> EBSCOhost. Cinema Image Gallery, for example, has been growing by
> approximately 20,000 images each year. Images are added quarterly,
> with each update usually including between 4,000 and 8,000 images.
> These updates include images from new (and often not yet released
> films) as well as from older films. We are continuing to add value,
> and expect the newest update will be available to customers the week
> of June 20. This update will bring the database to more than 210,000
> total images from 21,000 different films and TV shows.
> In addition to adding new images, the Awards are updated when the
> prizes are announced, allowing users to search for the winners and
> nominees of the major categories of the Academy Awards, Cannes Film
> Festival, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild. This update
> includes 4393 images from 831 films and TV shows, with more than 300
> of these films and TV shows becoming new to the database.
>
> While the “super databases” will not replace the existing databases,
> again they will offer customers the option to elect to upgrade to
> what will be more comprehensive, exhaustive resources with a
> combination of the Wilson refined/robust indexing along with
> critical full text. (www.ebscohost.com/superdatabases)
>
> In terms of providing more specific detail on what we plan to do on
> EBSCOhost, the following may provide some clarity with regard to Art
> Full text and other Wilson Art databases, in addition to the
> attached powerpoint, which offers information on the overall
> approach (not just related to art).
>
> Editorial Processing
> - EBSCO will continue to index articles capturing
> information specific to Art, such as: Artist & Works as well as
> Materials & Date
> - EBSCO will continue Art Reproduction article types,
> following HWW guidelines which will include the location of the art
> reproduction in addition to materials and date.
> - EBSCO will introduce a ‘Film Criticism’ article type to
> allow faster, accurate retrieval of records relevant to this area of
> study.
> Search Power
> - EBSCO will incorporate HWW’s ‘Use For’ thesaurus file
> into the EBSCOhost platform. This feature automatically expands
> searches to include equivalent terms. Example: “Alla Prima Painting”
> is used for “One-shot painting” . A search on “One-shot painting”
> will return records indexed with “Alla Prima Painting”.
> - EBSCO will provide Index Browse and Guided Style search
> options for key fields, including the Artist name as indexed in
> “Artist & Work.”
> Features & Functionality
> · EBSCO will support the Art Biographies feature,
> providing access to biographical material on artists and other key
> figures.
> · EBSCO will support linking from book reviews to
> book catalog records (though this will be available shortly after
> the H.W. Wilson Art databases are released.)
> · EBSCO will continue the Art thesaurus authority
> and introduce the EP Publications authority.
> Controlled Vocabulary
> · EBSCO and Wilson Editorial staffs are collaborating
> to incorporate key H.W. Wilson subject terms into EBSCO’s controlled
> vocabulary, which includes the Art thesaurus. This work includes:
> Deepening coverage of EP subject areas and modification of EP
> hierarchies by thesaurus editors, analyzing subject terms in the
> respective thesauri to identify same concepts and reduce to single
> representation, a unified thesaurus to be available by January 2012.
> · EBSCO will also incorporate HWW’s Name authority into
> our controlled vocabulary, especially personal names. EBSCO will
> also leverage the meta data (birth/death dates, titles, etc)
> associated with names.
> · EBSCO will incorporate non-English characters into
> our subject indexing, as HWW currently does.
> · EBSCO will cease uppercasing letters of the first
> word and move to sentence case (this will affect all headings in a
> mass update) as HWW currently does.
> Finally, it is worth noting that the merger with Wilson guarantees
> that EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) customers will have the strongest
> possible metadata in art (as well as virtually every other subject
> area). For example, EDS customers will have access to metadata from
> any of the following (if they subscribe): Art Index, Art Index
> Retro, Art Abstracts, Art Full Text, Art & Architecture Complete,
> Art Source, Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, Art Museum
> Inage Gallery, Cinema Image Gallery, ARTstor, JSTOR, Oxford Art
> Online, and much more.
> Of course we will have more information to share as we continue to
> move along. I hope this detail is helpful.
> Thank you,
