Elizabeth Byrne will retire July 2011 after 27 years as the head of the University of California, Berkeley’s Environmental Design Library. Her 42 years of service to the profession included librarian positions at the University of Cincinnati, San Diego Public Library, Detroit Public Library, and the University of Louisville. In addition to creating one of the strongest architecture collections in the United States, she has edited a number of books including *San Francisco Architecture* and, most recently, *Design on the Edge: a Century of Teaching Architecture at the **University** of ** California**, **Berkeley**, 1903-2003*. She has received UC Berkeley’s Chancellor's Distinguished Service Award (2011) and Distinguished Librarian Award (1991), and the Council of Planning Librarians’ Holway R. Jones Distinguished Service Award (1997). Elizabeth has also mentored dozens of young librarians through the Association of Architecture School Librarians, the Association of Architectural Librarians, and the Art Libraries Society of North America.
