Fyi – From Sally McCallum, LC’s initiative “to determine a transition path for the MARC 21 exchange format”

The Library of Congress is sharing the statement, “Transforming our Bibliographic Framework,” for the benefit of its external constituents.  Deanna B. Marcum, LC’s Associate Librarian for Library Services, will be leading the initiatives that will drive this transformation process.  The Library is mounting the statement now for early review.  Following the upcoming Annual Conference of the American Library Association in New Orleans, where discussions about the statement will occur, the Library will make further announcements.  A web site has been established for the Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative and that will be the central place for plans, news, and progress.  It will indicate formal channels established for working with the community, receiving feedback and input from various sources and stakeholders, and how the Library will proceed in this major undertaking.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Request for input: the future of the WEMI DP from MARBI at Midwinter

Apologies for cross-posting; please reply off-list by noon on Tuesday, May 31 to [log in to unmask]

John Myers recently wrote to the CC:DA email list about discussions taking place to formulate a proposal out of the WEMI DP that was presented to MARBI at the 2011 ALA Midwinter conference: http://www.loc.gov/marc/marbi/2011/2011-dp03.html -- that paper discussed "defining a new field in the MARC 21 Authority, Bibliographic, and Holdings formats to identify that the record is for a Work, Expression, Manifestation or Item."

I would appreciate any feedback ARLIS members have about "the necessity, desirability, or inadvisability of moving forward in the direction offered by 2011-DP03, namely, of being able to distinguish records as distinctly recording the attributes/elements applicable to the individual WEMI categories (as an alternative to the current composite record approach)."

I will compile feedback and report to John and the CC:DA list.  Names can be changed to protect the innocent, if desired.

Many thanks,

Dan Lipcan
