Hi everyone,

I recently put out a request for information on how museum libraries fit into the overall structure of their museum. A number requested that I share the information I gathered. Thank you for all that responded. Here it is in condensed form:

A number of museums in this group have changed their organizational structure recently and others have changed over the years.

I received 30 responses

The Library is part of the:

Education Department: 7

Curatorial/Collections: 17

Other: 2

Research, Technology, Audience Engagement (Education)

Arts Division

Reports to a Director who oversees Education and Curatorial: 3

Reports directly to Director: 1

Definitions of Collections and Curatorial varied. Some libraries were part of a Collections Dept. which may not have included Curatorial.

A number provided information about their Archives:

Archives part of the Library: 22

Archives separate: 4

There were also a few who don't have an Archives, a few who have recently begun a formal archives (as part of the library)

Only a few mentioned Visual Resources

7 libraries also contain visual resources, 3 libraries do not. 1 does a little rights and reproduction. Some no longer have visual resources.

Since I initiated this, the Toledo Museum of Art's set up:

TMA Reference Library is just the library.

Archives is separate.

Visual Resources is separate and deals with images, photography, rights and reproductions and also have a collection of DVDs and Videos. The library does not collect videos and films.
