Hello everyone! Getting excited about the upcoming VRA+ARLIS/NA Joint Conference? Only a few short weeks away so be sure to a) register and b) book a room at the conference hotel.

I've been fielding some questions behind the scenes about our conference program SCHED http://vraarlis11.sched.org/ and thought perhaps some of you had the same questions but were too shy to ask. By the way
it is GOOD for you to ask because SCHED* does make occasional changes to their user interface (UI) and it keeps me on my toes as well.

Here are a couple of recent ones:

How do I print out my own personal conference SCHED*?

Sign in (by now we hope you all have created your user profile!)
Click on My Profile.  You should now have a view that displays only the events you've selected, they display as black rather than in all the pretty colors.
Click the Print icon in the right-hand sidebar
This will open a Print view with Print this Page up in the top menu bar.

I've imported my SCHED* into Google Calendar, but I am on Pacific Time and I know the conference is on Central Time! Help!! How do I change the timezone for my conference calendar?

Unfortunately this is not something I can easily troubleshoot for everyone. Some calendar applications, including SCHED*, don't export their calendars with time zone information. If your own Google Calendar is in a different time zone than the calendar you're importing from SCHED*, this will likely result in your events showing up in your current time zone; events that begin at 8am CST display as beginning at 6am PST {{{yawn! Note to self: get COFFEE!}}}. Timezone settings only for the imported SCHED* calendar (vraarlis11 (username) are not editable in Google Calendar.  [for more on troubleshooting Google Calendar please see their handy Help page: http://www.google.com/support/calendar/?hl=en]

Couple of suggestions for coping with this:

  • For when you are planning from home: You can globally change the timezone setting for ALL your Google Calendars via Settings, Calendar Settings to view VRA+ARLIS/NA Conference event times in GST -06:00 Central Time.
  • Once you are in Minneapolis: From your handheld device or your laptop, if you have time zone support enabled, the timezones and your Google Calendar(s) should self-correct to Central Time. Or you can adjust the timezone once you have arrived.
Keep those questions coming -- either via direct emails or via the listservs.  As always, if we can, your conference planners are happy to be of assistance to you.

See you all in Minneapolis!!
