Re: [ARLIS-L] Book Covers: To remove or not remove... Here at Bowdoin, we keep them on, barcode both the book and the cover, and when the cover wears out we toss it. Amazingly, a lot of them stay on for a long time(but we have a ‘check-out to carrel only’ policy for the books that are here in the art library)...

Hi, Jillian,

Here at the University of Regina Library, we unfortunately remove the book covers. I couldn't get them to keep them just for the art materials. However, we do display covers of some new books in all call number areas on the ends of the shelves the books are on in our stacks. That at least does some advertising for the new titles. We also use some of the book covers in our new book display shelves.

Hi Jillian,

At the Department of Art Library at the University of Toronto, we keep the covers on the books and place an additional call number label on them.
A lot of time and effort went into the design of those covers, so we like to keep them.

Warm regards,

Margaret

Hello ARLIS
I’m curious to see what others schools do concerning book covers. Currently, we are putting plastic on the covers, covering our new books and putting them on display. After a few months, they get removed from display and placed into the stacks. We haven’t been removing the covers. What is your practice concerning book covers—do the covers get removed when the books get placed in standard shelving?
Thanks in advance for your help and opinions.
