DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY, MUSEUM AND STATEWIDE RESOURCES

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks an exceptional leader to provide strategic vision for the museum’s intellectual resources. Reporting to the Deputy Director for Art and Education, the Director will serve as Head Librarian for the daily operations of the VMFA Library, the largest art reference library in the southeast; manage and develop the Museum’s Statewide Outreach Program of over 200 partners across Virginia, the largest such program for a state art museum in the country; and lead museum staff in the development of new methods of information delivery and interpretation for library and educational resources and programs, museum collections,  and special exhibitions.  With a team of professional staff, this newly formed department and position will help build and sustain VMFA’s reputation as one of the top-ten comprehensive arts museums in the United States.

Qualifications:  The successful candidate will have a sophisticated understanding of the latest developments in library and educational outreach, new media and technology.  He/she will have a degree in Art History, Art Administration, Museum Education or Museum Studies from a recognized institution or equivalent training, a qualification in library science (MLS or equivalent), and a minimum of 5-10 years progressive experience working in a major cultural resource center.  A MLS degree is preferred but for an exceptional candidate equivalent experience will be considered.  Additionally, the successful candidate will have proven administrative, supervisory, leadership, interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills.  He/she must possess the ability to manage financial affairs and develop long-range plans; the ability to plan, prioritize and manage many projects and assignments at once; and the ability to analyze, assess and make recommendations and decisions based upon a sophisticated understanding of museum policies and practices.  The successful candidate must pass a criminal background check.
