Marianne Petit Struwwelpeter : Contemporary Handmade Books Art Wall on Third Exhibition 18 December 2010 – 1 April 2011 The Art Collection Mid-Manhattan Library 40th Street @ 5th Avenue New York , NY 10016 212-340-0871 Mon-Thur 8-11, Fri 8-8, Sat -Sun 10-6 The Art and Picture Collections present the installation Struwwepeter: Contemporary Handmade Books by artist and NYU interactive telecommunications professor Marianne Petit. In the mid-19th century Heinrich Hoffman wrote and illustrated The Struwwelpeter a series of morality tales for children. The result in each tale can now be considered disastrous and shockingly inappropriate for children. Inspired by their fantastical nature, Petit has created three-dimensional interpretations of the stories in the form of flag, tunnel, carousel and pop-up books. Included in this exhibition are Shockheaded Peter , a small accordion-fold pop-up book; The Story of Flying Robert , a flag book; The Story of Augustus Who Would Not Eat His Soup , a series of tunnel books; The Story of Little Suck-A-Thumb , a series of tunnel books; and the premiere of Pauline and the Matches , a carousel book.
