Hi Ruth,

Here are two book titles that could also benefit this student:

Donaldson, M. (2008). Clearance and Copyright: Everything You Need to
Know for Film and Television. Los Angeles: Silman-James Press.

Fishman, S. (2010). The Public Domain: How To Find and Use
Copyright-Free Writings, Music, Art and More. Berkeley, CA: Nolo.

(Shameless plug here: Related sources and other tidbits can be located
here: http://libguides.lib.umt.edu/PublicDomainCC ).

In the past, I've also advised authors who want to publish images in a
potential orphan works situation to talk with their editors to see how
they may want to handle it.

Best of luck :).

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Copyright question

A graduate student here is publishing an essay and wants to include two
advertisements, one from McCall's 1933 and one from Woman's Home
Companion 1929.  She wants to know how to find out if anyone holds
copyright on them or if they are now in the public domain.

I pointed her to Cornell's wonderful copyright/public domain chart, but
would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks, Ruth Thomas, Mugar Library, Boston University
