Helen Hiebert • String Theory

Helen Hiebert recently pulled Ashley’s Book of Knots off her bookshelf and started exploring the art of tying knots. Then she experimented with “not tying them,” trapping them between translucent sheets of handmade paper. As she carefully arranges a loosely tied knot and rests it on top of a freshly made sheet of wet paper, it begins to find its form as she manipulates the loops and ends of the string and composes a “drawing” with the string.

Hiebert tells us, “Sometimes my drawing process is informed by the delightful tension that is created as the string wriggles and writhes when it comes into contact with the wet sheet of paper. And finally, I lay another sheet of paper on top of the string drawing, pinning the strands in position and trapping them in time.”

The highlight of Hiebert’s exhibition at 23 Sandy Gallery is a suite of six knotted string drawings, inspired by historical knot illustrations, accompanied by a poem by Portland poet and recent Walt Whitman Award winner Carl Adamshick and housed in a clamshell box designed and produced by Sandy Tilcock of Eugene’s lone goose press.

Sue Huggins Leopard • From Memory

23 Sandy Gallery is also pleased to feature the latest work by Sue Huggins Leopard this month. Leopard’s current artist book works celebrate the special joys of 19th century poetry, hummingbirds and ghosts, among other things—though not necessarily in that order. Sue is known for connecting a sense of memory to myth and history through images and words by using her own etchings, relief prints, collages, handwriting and letterpress.

Sue won the Best of Show award in Broadsided, a national juried exhibition of letterpress broadsides here at 23 Sandy Gallery in October of 2009, the prize for which is this solo show of her work. Sue Leopard works from her studio in Rochester, New York. Recent work includes, Past Surmise, a portfolio of broadsides featuring 12 poems by Emily Dickinson, one of which was her Broadsided entry.
