Subject: [SAH-LISTSERV] Los Angeles Architecture 1940-1990 Residential Grants

Los Angeles Architecture 1940-1990 Residential Grants

Residential grants will be offered as part of the Getty Research
Institute's new initiative Los Angeles Architecture, 1940-1990. The
GRI's remarkable Special Collections-which contain such treasures as the
photographic archive of Julius Shulman, papers and plans of Pierre
Koenig, John Lautner, as well as the photographs of Camilo Vergara-offer
a unique resource for scholarly investigation. We invite scholars
interested in all aspects of the city's architectural history and urban
development in this period to apply.

Eligibility

These grants are for established scholars, writers, independent
researchers, or pre- and postdoctoral candidates. Applications are
welcome from researchers of all nationalities who are working in the
arts, humanities, or social sciences.

Terms

Senior grantees may be in residence for one of three periods: September
2011 to June 2012, September 2011 to December 2011, or January 2012 to
June 2012. A stipend of up to $65,000 for the year will be awarded based
on length of stay, need, and salary. Predoctoral grantees are in
residence from September 2011 to June 2012 and receive a stipend of
$25,000; postdoctoral grantees are in residence from September 2011 to
June 2012 and receive a stipend of $30,000. All grantees are provided a
workspace at the Getty Research Institute, an apartment in the Getty
scholar housing complex, and airfare to and from Los Angeles. These

Los Angeles Architecture Residential Grants are awarded on a competitive

based on: (1) the overall quality of the application; (2) how the
proposed project bears upon the Los Angeles Architecture, 1940-1990
research theme; (3) the applicant's past achievements; and (4) how the
project would benefit from the resources at the Getty, including its
