James Lee Byars : The Sphere of Generosity

September 27 - November 19, 2010

Specific Object / David Platzker is pleased to announce the opening of
the exhibition "James Lee Byars : The Sphere of Generosity." The
exhibition will be on view at Specific Object from September 27 to
November 19, 2010.

"The Sphere of Generosity" is a mystical multiple in the form of a
2-1/2 inch handmade ball of fired clay, produced as a contribution by
Byars to the artist's book "Zero Mass: The Art of Eric Orr."

Published on the occasion of Eric Orr's exhibition at Anders Tornberg
Gallery, Lund, Sweden, October 27 - November 21, 1990, "Zero Mass" is a
330-page book, bound in blue steel, conceived by Orr [1939 - 1998] and
his friends: artist James Lee Byars [1932 - 1997], and the critic
Thomas McEvilley [1939 - ] during a journey to Egypt the trio took in
early 1989.

The anodized steel faced book is comprised of extensive images and
text, serving as a quasi-catalogue raisonné of Orr's work jointly
authored by Orr, Byars, McEvilley with additional contributions by
Timothy Leary, Pat Steir, Rebecca Horn, Terry Allen, Larry Bell and
others. Like all works by Byars and McEvilley the narrative reads as a
personal journal about their friendship, which is shared with Orr.

Beyond documenting Orr's work and the Egyptian trip, the collaborative
project "Zero Mass" includes Byars' mysterious "Sphere of Generosity,"
a visible marker of his relationships and by extension intended to be
shared with others.

Produced in an unsigned and unnumbered edition of 1000, the "The Sphere
of Generosity" multiple and book are housed in a molded Styrofoam box,
which is packaged within a screenprinted cardboard sleeve.

Through the course of the exhibition "The Sphere of Generosity,"
together with "Zero Mass," will be priced at $100 (plus shipping and
tax where required). After November 19, 2010, the price will rise to
$250.

Specific Object's hours are Monday - Friday 10 AM to 5 PM, or by
