Renowned curator and art historian Klaus Kertess will be in conversation with celebrated artist Carroll Dunham, relating some of his experiences from a long and prescient art career, and reflecting on the work of some of the artists he's come to know. Seen, Written, a collection of essays written by Kertess over the last 20 years, will be published this fall by Gregory R. Miller & Co.  Artists covered in the book range from Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, and Brice Marden, to Raymond Pettibon, Mark Bradford, and Matthew Ritchie.

In 1966, Klaus Kertess co-founded the Bykert Gallery. Under Kertess’s direction, over the next decade, the Bykert Gallery represented Chuck Close, Barry Le Va, Brice Marden, Dorothea Rockburne, Alan Saret, and Paul Sharits, among many other groundbreaking artists. Since leaving the gallery in 1975 to pursue writing and curating, Kertess has worked with many of the most significant artists of the last four decades. He has written for Artforum, Parkett, Art in America, and numerous other publications and has published monographs on Peter Hujar, Brice Marden, Joan Mitchell, and Jane Freilicher. Kertess has recently written about John Chamberlain, Albert Oehlen, and Matthew Ritchie. He has curated several major exhibitions, including the 1995 Whitney Biennial, Willem de Kooning: Drawing Seeing/Seeing Drawing for the Drawing Center in New York, and, more recently, Meditations in an Emergency, the inaugural exhibition for the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit in 2007. Kertess received the Lawrence A. Fleischman award for scholarly excellence in the field of American art history from the Smithsonian Archives for American Art in October 2009.

Carroll Dunham is an American artist who lives and works in New York City and rural Connecticut. Dunham has held numerous solo exhibitions at galleries and museums internationally, including Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany; Millesgarden in Stockholm, Sweden; Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, MA; Drammens Museum in Norway. The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York launched a major retrospective of his work in 2002. Dunham received the Skowhegan Medal for Distinction in Painting in 2004. There are several upcoming solo exhibitions for the artist, including Gladstone Gallery Brussels in spring 2011.
