Pop-up books captivate and excite the child in all of us. As a unique genre
or subset in the world of book arts, pop-up books are three-dimensional
handmade books whose pages pop-up, move, slide, twirl, whirl, light up, or
even sound off. This international, juried exhibition of handmade, movable
artist books is presented in conjunction with the biennial conference of The
Movable Book Society, which brought nearly 100 pop-up book enthusiasts to
Portland last weekend.* *

According to Wikipedia, “The term pop-up book is often applied to any
three-dimensional or movable book, although properly the umbrella term
movable book covers pop-ups, transformations, tunnel books, volvelles,
flaps, pull-tabs, pop-outs, pull-downs, and more, each of which performs in
a different manner.”

The 43 handmade books in this exhibition, created by 36 artists from across
the country and as far away as England, China, Equador and Canada, are
fascinating examples of “paper engineering.” Gallery visitors will be
enthralled by the sculptural constructions as well as the surreal, whimsical
and social nature of the subject matters explored by the artists. Here are a
few highlights from the show:

Paul Johnson’s *Tree House* creates a magical fantasy world that invites the
viewer to enjoy the light-hearted nature of the piece and marvel in its
paper engineering. This amazing book is built without a single folded piece
of paper—all of its elements are cut and interlocking but not folded. (

Once you open Collette Fu’s intricate *Yi Costume Festival*, you will feel
as though you are one of the two thousand people participating in the annual
celebration of her ancestor’s minority Chinese black Yi tribe. (

Inspired by a speech by Jacques Chirac, Elsi Vassdal Ellis’ book, *There
Goes the Neighborhood*, uses 19th century engravings to explore modern day
environmental issues that affect our lives in so many ways. (

The three distinguished jurors for *Pop-Up Now!* come from varied
backgrounds as collectors, preservationists and book artists. But all have
one thing in common—they are avid collectors and enthusiasts of movable
books.

Ellen J.K. Rubin seeks book objects that use movable paper elements to
enhance the idea or story. She has collected over 6,600 moveable books over
the years and is a founding member of The Movable Book Society.

Larry Seidman, M.D. is a collector and seller of antique movable books and
other ephemera. He has an interest in book preservation and works with
a restorer to carefully bring them back into circulation. He has been a
member of The Movable Book Society since its inception, and has been a board
member for the past four years.

Jill Timm an award-winning book artist focusing on small editions of
handcrafted books, often using interesting structures and non-typical
materials to convey the essence of the subject. Being a book artist, Timm
looks for books with great movables as well as beautiful craftsmanship.

The Movable Book Society is a forum for collectors, artists, and curators,
and others to share enthusiasm and exchange information about pop-up and
movable books. The nearly 400 worldwide members have an interest in all
types of movable paper: commercial pop-up books, artist books, business and
greeting cards, advertising, and more. The Society has held biennial
conferences since 1996. In 2004 The Moveable Book Society published a highly
coveted, collectible book titled,* A Celebration of Pop-up and Movable Books
*. This limited-edition boxed book commemorates 700 years of movable book
history. More information about the Society can be found at
www.movablebooksociety.org.
