JUST RELEASED:

Syrie Maugham: Staging Glamorous Interiors by Pauline, C. Metcalf, a
historian, author, lecturer and restoration consultant.

Syrie Maugham recounts the dramatic life and career of this international
trendsetter. The book draws upon extensive research on both sides of the
Atlantic, from the drawing rooms of Mayfair's aristocratic and artistic
elite, to the homes of New York and Chicago's industrial scions and
Hollywood starlets. Since the 1932 publication of her famously "all-white
room," Syrie Maugham's signature style remains a constant inspiration to
designers, and her life an ongoing fascination. Metcalf's richly
illustrated text presents the most comprehensive study to date on Maugham
and her innovative blend of traditional forms with moderne design. The book
includes a never-before-published essay by Camilla Chandon, Syrie Maugham's
granddaughter.

Ms. Metcalf has a master's degree in historic preservation from Columbia
University and has written and lectured widely on architecture, interiors,
and collecting, particularly on influential women in these spheres. Her
essay on the partnership of David Adler and his sister, Frances Elkins,
appears in David Adler, Architect: The Elements of Style (Yale University
Press, 2002). Metcalf's expertise on author and tastemaker Edith Wharton
has been instrumental in the restoration of The Mount, the writer's Lenox
Massachusetts home and helped inform a major exhibition and accompanying
book on the designer whose career Wharton helped launch, Ogden Codman and
the Decoration of Houses (David R. Godine, 1988).

"(Syrie Maugham)... makes the point that no pedestal was too high for the
woman who popularized the all-white room, an icily moderne cocktail of
mirrored screens and fireplaces, geometrically sculptured carpets, shagreen
tables, satin slipcovers, towering plaster lamps in the form of palm trees
and velvet velvet! lampshades.
Metcalf's... research and command of detail is dazzling..." -Christopher
Petkanas, T-magazine

"Traditional goes Moderne in Syrie Maugham: Staging Glamorous Interiors, an
essential book filled with excellent research and photography about Syrie's
profound influence on taste in decoration and furniture on both sides of the
Atlantic." - Richard Guy Wilson
