Writer and Professor Suzanne Stephens leads a discussion with architects Thomas Kligerman and Joel Barkley of Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects. On the publication of Ike Kligerman Barkley: Houses, the topic will address the impact of the information age upon the process and product of a firm well-known for its engagement with the traditional canon of architectural history. These architects known primarily for their vividly referential domestic architecture will discuss how after coming of age in an era of the rediscovered eclecticism often found in the pages of books, the digital age has challenged and enriched their architecture's access to past and present.

Thomas Kligerman was raised in Connecticut and New Mexico. Years in France and England as a student sparked his interest in the rich history of domestic architecture, gardens and landscapes. Thomas received his Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University and his Master of Architecture from Yale School of Architecture. After working for Robert A. M. Stern Architects he and John Ike founded Ike & Kligerman Architects, later Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects. He serves on the boards of a number of charitable and educational institutions including The Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation.

Thomas's integrated approach to landscape, architecture and interiors assures clients a harmonious relationship between building and environment. He has an omnivorous taste for traditional and modern styles of architecture. His portfolio includes private residences throughout the United States and abroad. His work has been featured in Architectural Digest and the firm has been included in the Architectural Digest AD100 since 1995.

Joel Barkley is an architect as well as a watercolorist. He brings a painterly approach to the composition of houses and gardens. A Chattanooga, Tennessee native, Joel received his Master in Architecture from Princeton University after receiving a Bachelor of Science from Georgia Institute of Technology. He attended the Ecoles d'Art Americaines en France Fontainebleau, and was awarded the Thesis Prize at Princeton. Before joining John Ike and Thomas A. Kligerman to form Ike Kligerman Barkley, he worked for Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill; Robert A.M. Stern Architects; and Diller + Scofidio. Joel has illustrated several gardening books. He pursues organic gardening and beekeeping in Bernardsville, New Jersey, and is co-owner of the restaurant Broadway East on New York City's Lower East Side.

Suzanne Stephens a deputy editor of Architectural Record, has been a writer, editor, and critic in the field of architecture for several decades appearing in publications such as Progressive Architecture, Architectural Digest, Vanity Fair, House & Garden, and the New York Times. She has Ph.D. in architectural history from Cornell University, and teaches a seminar in the history of architectural criticism in the architecture program of Barnard and Columbia colleges. In addition, Stephens is the architectural advisor to Checkerboard Film Foundation, which recently produced the film series, "Landmarks in 21st Century American Architecture." She was the lead author of Imagining Ground Zero: Official and Unofficial Proposals for the World Trade Center Site, published in 2004 by Architectural Record and Rizzoli International. Currently Stephens serves on the board of directors of the Sir John Soane Museum Foundation in New York, and is a Life Trustee of the New York Architectural League.

Architectural Explorations in Books is a new series of engaging programs delving into the critical role that architecture books play in the understanding of contemporary urban developments and structures. The events feature book presentations and discussions by world acclaimed architects, critics, curators, designers, historians, photographers and writers.
