TREATMENT OF 1883 CIRCUS POSTERS REVEALS HIDDEN TREASURE

THE NORTHEAST DOCUMENT CONSERVATION CENTER (NEDCC) recently treated a collection of rare circus posters that were recovered from the side of a home outside Burlington, Vermont.

WHEN THE HOMEOWNERS BEGAN RENOVATIONS IN 1991, the posters were discovered, pasted onto the boards beneath the siding. Research revealed that a circus came to town in 1883 and the posters were mounted to advertise the coming extravaganza. Soon afterward the posters were covered over - where they remained hidden, protected from light and weather for the next 108 years.

DURING CONSERVATION TREATMENT at NEDCC's lab in Andover, Massachusetts, a second hidden treasure was soon revealed.
