Album IV
was published by Art Metropole on the occasion of the exhibition
"Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance" at the
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, where Jacob's Album IV (2004-05) was recently acquired
for their permanent collection. Published as part of a series of
"Album" artist books, Album
IV is presented as a full-colour volume in an edition of 1000
copies. This work consists of hundreds of images culled from a variety of
books, magazines, and other publications. Through processes of visual
association, these images compose an extended narrative around various
themes: pregnancy and childbirth, the trepidation of first steps, the
schooling of children, the erotic dimension of mentorship and leadership
roles, the formation of bonds of friendship and clique groupings, the
reinforcement of behaviour and accomplishments, and social participation,
withdrawal or transformation. Using imagery excised from published sources,
these topics weave to form an encyclopedic thesis on the pedagogical roots of
social experience.
