It was a latex glove. We had the same problem with ours and
Women’s Studio Workshop replaced our copy.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Preservation question: "My 9 migraine
cures"
Greetings!
We’ve
discovered a rubbery blob with a drinking straw attached inside the pages of
the book “My 9 Migraine Cures” (OCLC: 15694020). Given the other
interactive elements within the book, we’re confident the straw and rubber (a
latex glove, perhaps?) were a balloon of some kind, for the reader to blow
into.
Since
ours has clearly disintegrated, I’m wondering if other libraries have
encountered this same problem. If so, what did you do as far as preservation?
We’d like to remove the remaining rubbery substance from the book, to
keep the pages from sticking together.
We’re
also considering replacing the straw and “balloon” with similar objects, in
order to replicate the artist’s original work. Does anyone have a copy of this
book with the original objects intact? If so, can you tell me what the
balloon-like object is?
Thank
you for your assistance, in advance!
Greg
