We are pleased to report that as of January, 2010 the /Avery Index to
Architectural Periodicals/ transferred all business and technical
operations from the Getty Research Institute (GRI) to the Columbia
University Libraries (CUL). The Avery Architectural and Fine Arts
Library has produced the Avery Index now for more than 75 years and will
continue to do so with all editorial functions led by Ted Goodman,
General Editor. The Avery Index is offered as a subscription service
through each of four vendors: EBSCO, H.H. Wilson, OCLC and ProQuest.
The transition from GRI to Columbia was managed by staff at the Avery
Library and technical groups at Columbia, Getty and ExLibris. Through a
highly collaborative process, we successfully migrated content and
infrastructure without any loss of data or interruption of service. We
are extremely grateful for Getty Research Institute's operational
support over the last 25 years, and look forward to maintaining and
growing the Avery Index with the continuing support of our subscribers
and the Columbia University Libraries.
We are now beginning an evaluative process aimed at charting future
directions for the Avery Index from both content and technical
perspectives. We will be conducting over the course of the coming months
a series of activities to help us better understand the needs and
expectations of our user community.
In March, /Avery Index/ staff surveyed members and conducted focus
groups at the Association of Architecture School Librarians annual
meeting in New Orleans.
We are planning to conduct these same survey and focus groups at the
ARLIS/NA conference later this month. Focus groups will be held in lieu
of our regular Avery Index User Group meeting. Because of space and time
limitations, registration for the focus group will be limited to 30
participants. Information on registration will be posted to ARLIS-L
later today.
