 The Harvard Graduate School of Designs seeks an experienced, energetic
professional with demonstrated managerial skills to lead its Frances
Loeb Library. Reporting to the Executive Dean, oversees the management
of the Frances Loeb Library in support of the intellectual mission of
the Graduate School of Design. Provides vision in implementing
strategies that utilize both traditional and innovative information
resources to enrich teaching and further the academic agenda of the
GSD’s faculty and students; Collaborates with faculty, staff and
students to assure fulfillment of the educational goals of the School;
Oversees the operations and management of the library, establishing
policy and formulating operating procedures in support of overall goals;
Prepares long and short range strategic plans for the library, including
space planning, the integration of new technologies and the improvement
of services to users; Provides leadership to a staff of approximately
16, in the departments of Public Services, Technical Services and
Collections Management, Visual Resources, Special Collections,
Conservations, and the Digital Design Information Group; Manages the
library budget; Determines fund-raising needs, and with the aid of
senior library staff, development staff, and Friends of the Frances Loeb
Library and its Council, plans and implements a variety of fund-raising
activities in support of pre-determined goals; Participates as an
Assistant Dean in planning for long-range education, research, financial
and administrative objectives for the School and in developing
strategies, options, cost estimates and implementation processes for
information services to support; Represents the Library and the Graduate
School of Design on the University Library Council and other
university-wide committees, as well as in national and international
activities.
 
The ideal candidate will be a leader with experience working in a
team-based environment; they will have strong management and decision
making abilities; they will be a creative thinker with the ability to
provide vision and strategic direction; the ability to interact
effectively with a broad clientele including faculty, students and art
and design professionals; the ability to foster collegiality and
flexibility in others. In addition, the candidate should have the
following qualifications: Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA
accredited institution; solid knowledge of architectural and urban
topics; minimum of 10 years of managerial library experience; thorough
understanding of many areas of a library’s operations as evidenced by a
history of increasingly responsible library positions; ability to
identify and solve problems with diplomacy and creativity; demonstrated
history of strong management, supervisory and organizational skills,
with excellent written and oral communication ability; experience in
planning and implementing the provision of electronic resources and
services to library users; integrity and collegial disposition are
essential; demonstrated ability to cultivate friends and donors, and the
ability to lead in a team environment.
