For many years, I took my Seminar in Art Librarianship students on a field trip to the Cincinnati Art Museum where Mona Chapin provided an incredibly thorough introduction to management, staffing, budgeting, collection development, organizational issues, public services, facilities changes including renovation and compact shelving installation in her library, and other complex matters related to the administration of the Cincinnati Art Museum Library.  Her dedication to the Museum Library and her conscientious attention to every detail of its management were most apparent.  In addition, the students were impressed by her warm and generous manner and by the extensive documentation she prepared and shared with us about her library.   She also described a fundraising program which she developed for the library to enhance its collections budget.  My students’ classroom instruction was greatly enhanced by having this opportunity to learn from Mona’s experiences in managing her library and to see firsthand her extensive contributions, as well as being able to meet her staff and volunteers who also talked about their roles in the library.

From my perspective, the Cincinnati Art Museum was most fortunate to have her conscientious and professional leadership of the Museum’s Library.   She was a respected colleague and a gentle soul who will be dearly missed.

Sad news:

Mona Chapin, Cincinnati Art Museum Librarian for 30 years, passed away on Sunday.

I did not know Mona personally, but I do know that she was dearly loved by her Cincinnati Art Museum colleagues and by her friends and colleagues at UC, ARLIS/NA, and ARLIS/OV (Ohio Valley). She will be missed by many.
