I found when working with major 19th c. French artist for a class last spring that what was needed came about 40% from our own collection (mostly comparative material, photos, etc.); 40% from ARTstor; and about 20% from various sources on the web.
The percentage of material available in ARTStor varies by area, but it gets better all the time as more relevant collections are added. No one here uses the OIV, and some faculty still feel there isn't enough in their area to make it really worth their time, but they are all very saavy users of all the available resources now, and quickly learn whether they should go to ARTstor, our own campus image bank, or the web first.

ARTstor is of as much use to users outside the traditional areas like studio and art history, if not more. While there may still be virtually no Picasso, there is an amazing richness of image content over a wide array of human culture. It is definitely worth the campus outlay, and that's how it should be done - as a campus-wide investment.

Subject: Re: [ARLIS-L] Artstor or Bridgeman databases

We have been using ARTstor since the fall of 2005 and find it a tremendous
value.

We have been slowly moving our faculty, individually, to this resource. We
target one or two faculty members a semester and work with them directly to
help them move from 35mm dependency to digital. The faculty love the
'folders' and ARTstor's proprititory off line viewer (Power Point) the OIV.
It is used heavily by our faculty, students and staff. Last years
'circulation' figures were: 25,195 - up slightly from the previous year
when there were 23,637 viewings of images. We are a small college with
slightly over 1000 FTEs.

I have not only been impressed with this image bank, but also with ARTstor's
customer service. The staff at ARTstor are keen on knowing any issues
which arise and solving them as quickly as possible.

Hope this is helpful. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have
any further questions.

Christine

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Artstor or Bridgeman databases

I need to find out how well Artstor and/ or Bridgeman image databases
have been used at other University Libraries.

Are they considered a good value for the amount invested?
Could they be replaced with Google image?
Are they used primarily by faculty or students?

I will appreciate any information or opinion on these databases.

Thanks, Marilyn
