Much of Ken Smith’s work pushes beyond traditional typologies – plaza, street, and garden – to design that explores the expressive power of landscape as an art form. John Beardsley, who wrote the introduction to Ken Smith: Landscape Architect, will join him to discuss his parallel approach to contemporary urban projects at two scales: the large scale of conceptual ideas and the small scale of tectonics, materiality, and craft.

Ken Smith is the principal of Workshop: Ken Smith Landscape Architect, with offices in New York and Irvine, California. He is a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he is currently a visiting design critic, and Iowa State University.

John Beardsley is a senior lecturer in the department of landscape architecture at the Harvard Graduate school of Design and director of garden and landscape studies at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. He has written extensively on public and environmental art, including the books Earthworks and Beyond: Contemporary Art in the Landscape and Gardens of Revelation: Environments by Visionary Artists .

Architectural Explorations in Books is a new series of engaging programs delving into the critical role that architecture books play in the understanding of contemporary urban developments and structures. The events feature book presentations and discussions by world acclaimed architects, critics, curators, photographers and writers.
