I recently viewed two wonderful portraits made up entirely of pushpins by Eric Daigh in Grand Rapids, Michigan’s Art Prize contest.

Here’s the link:

It was amazing.  The artist himself called it a mosaic too.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] term for a type of drawing or graphic image?

Semi-serious response from the art specialist on my staff, Matthew Mann:

I have no idea what that term might be. I know what they're talking about though...like a tree drawn using plus signs, or something.

"Semiotics" is the best term I can come up with, but that doesn't refer specifically to a work of art, only the symbol itself.

On the graphic design side I am thinking of "photomosaics", but again that isn't exactly what they are asking about I don't think.

Maybe someone needs to invent one. Give it a try. "Semiopomorphism". I just made that up.

I'm hoping that the collective wisdom of arlis colleagues will have an

answer to this:   I've been trying to find examples of images or

drawings where the image, perhaps a face or figure, is made up of multiples of small images like letters, words, or figures, etc.  Is

there a term or label for such images?   Or a more precise description

for them?  If you can point me to any examples, or names of artists (probably graphic artists in advertising or commercial art?), I would appreciate it.
