This is a great topic Selale, and I'm sure you will get
many responses. There are a number of initiatives out there trying to come up
with an international solution to standardize vocabularies.
The AAT is so comprehensive that you might expect
everyone to adopt it, but in practice each art library has its own unique
needs, and likes to develop its own vocabulary, or at least make some
adjustments to the AAT before applying it.
For example Bridgeman Education (www.bridgemaneducation.com) has
been doing extensive vocabulary development work for the last two years, an
initiative in part funded by the SILVER Project in the UK. Implementation
during 2010 should improve the already extensive metadata in its educational
database and help users find the images they seek faster. If anyone wishes
more detailed information about the project or our research please feel free to
contact me.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Art thesaurus
Greetings all,
I am preparing thesaurus on art, primarily painting. I
benefit from "Art and
Architecture Thesaurus" but I need extra ones. I
wonder if any of you have
controlled vocabulary list on art or painting which
indicates hierarchical
relationship. I'd grateful if you could help me with
that.
thanks in advance,
