Broward
County Library’s Bienes Museum of the Modern Book is pleased to announce
the opening of the exhibition “Japan and the Art of War, 1863-1945:
Japanese Military Art and Artifacts from the Mitchell Wolfson, Jr. Study
Centre, November 9, 2009-March 15, 2010”.
As Japan
adjusted to its new role as an industrialized nation and a major world power at
the end of the nineteenth century, artists and designers played an important
role in interpreting issues surrounding war. The idea of conflict – the
way it was presented to the Japanese people and to the larger world –
evolved as Japan grew in power and developed its modern identity. The
seventy-eight objects on view provide a narrative from a very specific
historical perspective yet are intended to provoke thought and generate
questions that are transferrable to our contemporary world.
Included
in the exhibit are prints, books and periodicals, kimonos, kamishibai, flags
and banners, posters, calendars, sake cups, folding screens, medals and
medallions, postcards, board games, matchbox labels, scrolls, lantern slides,
commemorative stamps, and toy soldiers.
