Architectural Explorations in Books
is a new series of engaging programs delving into the critical role that architecture books play in the understanding of contemporary urban developments and structures. The events feature book presentations and discussions by world acclaimed architects, critics, curators, photographers and writers.
What makes a building work? How can architecture affect our lives? Paul Goldberger, the architecture critic of
The New Yorker
and author of
Building Up and Tearing Down: Reflections on the Age of Architecture
and
Why Architecture Matters
,
and the architecture critic Michael Sorkin, author of
Twenty Minutes in Manhattan,
talk about the role architecture can play in people's lives, how they judge buildings, and what effect architecture criticism can have on the life of New York today. Copies of the two books will be available for purchase and signing at the end of the program.
Paul Goldberger
is the architecture critic for
The New Yorker.
He also holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at the
New
School
in
New York City
. He began his career at the
New York Times,
where his architecture criticism was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism, the highest award in journalism. Goldberger is the author of several books, including the recently published
Why Architecture Matters. His chronicle of the process of rebuilding Ground Zero,
Up from
Zero: Politics, Architecture, and the Rebuilding of
New York,
was named one of the
New York Times
Notable Books for 2004. He has also written
The City Observed:
New York, The Skyscraper, On the Rise: Architecture and Design in a Post-Modern Age, Above

Michael Sorkin
is Distinguished Professor of Architecture and Design and director of the graduate program in urban design at the City College of New York. He was formerly the architecture critic for the
Village Voice.
He is the author of many books including,
Variations on a Theme Park, Local Code, Some Assembly Required,
Against the Wall, and
Indefensible Space.
His new book
All Over the Map
will be released on March 29, 2010.
