If you’re in the Philadelphia area, don't miss the Third Annual Book Paper Scissors
Artists' Book Fair at Parkway Central (Free Library of Philadelphia), Saturday, December
5th from 10 am - 4 p.m. It's free and open to the public. This festive event
features prints, artists' books, handmade paper, zines, origami, blank books,
and paper sculpture and jewelry by more than 30 artists. if it's paper-based
art, it's here. Come and buy, or just be inspired! You will find many
affordable and interesting gifts for everyone on your list.
Learn to make a pouchoir holiday
card for a special someone with book artists Kay Healy and Anni Altshuler.
Pochoir is a French stenciling technique that was often used to color prints
and books, especially in the early 1900's. Each participant will learn the
technique and create their own handmade pochoir greeting. The workshops (which
are kid-friendly) will be held at 11 am and 2 pm in the Story Hour Room
in the Children's Department on the ground floor.
This event is organized by Philadelphia Center for the Book
and sponsored by the Print & Picture Collection. A portion of the proceeds
benefit the Library.

On the 2nd floor, Art and Print Department Galleries (9-5) – Show
and Bestow: The Ruth Hughes Collection of Artists’ Books recently assembled and
about to be donated to Oberlin College, an exhibition of 78 artists’
books. Through December 30th.
On the 3rd floor, Rare Book Department Gallery (1-5 pm) – The
Spirit of Satire, an exhibition which explores the various dimensions of
the satiric voice from a visual and literary perspective. Through March 19,
2010.
On the 3rd floor, in the Elkins Room, in Rare Books, at 2:00 pm – There’s
Nothing Funny About Satire: One Cartoonist’s Illustrated Guide to the World as
We Don’t Know It , a presentation by Signe Wilkinson, editorial cartoonist
for the Philadelphia Daily News and creator of the nationally-syndicated comic
strip “Family Tree.”
