As many of you may already know, the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) recently launched a new online Iconclass browser, replacing the 10-year-old "Libertas browser."
 
The browser offers a completely new interface, so that now the system can be searched using multiple keywords, as well as combinations of keywords and classification numbers.  (A big drawback of the old version was that searches could only consist of a single keyword.)
 
A great new feature is the inclusion of 85,000 images from the RKDImages database, which act as visual scope notes" for the use of Iconclass. Each image is hyperlinked to its full record in the RKD's database; there is also a link to the large German national "Bildindex" database (http://www.bildindex.de).
 
I believe that Iconclass is a powerful, multilingual* tool which, combined with other documentation tools like the Getty vocabularies, the Library of Congress Authorities, the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials, and other controlled vocabularies and classification systems, can greatly enhance documentation of and end-user access to visual materials.
