At the Philadelphia Museum of Art Library we have only recently begun to
keep book covers. We only save dust jackets of books that are related
to our institution: exhibition catalogs, PMA publications, and covers
that illustrate works of art in our collection. The covers are retained
on non-circulating copies of books (additional copies in the circulating
collection do not retain their dust jackets). We double bar-code on
both the book and the plastic. The covers that are not used are given
to the Education Department to be used in art education projects.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Book jackets

We have recently had a discussion here about the use of book covers in
the library. I would be interested in knowing if you use and how you use
book jackets-i.e., if you use them for display of new art and
architecture books, do you retain covers on when placed back into the
stacks as part of the regular collection? Do you also cover with plastic
book wrap? Trying to decide where best to put barcodes.
