I do what Moira does, put up the book covers on the bulletin board. Our art collection is in the main library across campus somewhat so kind of far to walk. I try to entice them to walk to the main library with these. I have a sign that says: ”if you like the book cover, you’ll love the book”  I allow the students to take the covers. They love it.

Subject: Re: [ARLIS-L] Book jackets

We use our dust jackets as they were intended: on the book.  We use covers to keep them nice.  I've found that books with covers get circulated more, especially among art students, as they covers attract they eye where a plain black cloth cover does not.

In Atlanta, I used them to advertise our acquisitions.  I used two bulletin boards in the halls and printed out duplicate spine labels to put on the covers. I only chose great covers - got to keep that visual interest going!  We seemed to get a lot of students - and faculty too - coming into the library with a call number scribbled on a bit of paper or on their hands looking for the book that used to have the "cool" cover.

Best,
Moira

We have recently had a discussion here about the use of book covers in the library. I would be interested in knowing if you use and how you use book jackets—i.e., if you use them for display of new art and architecture books, do you retain covers on when placed back into the stacks as part of the regular collection? Do you also cover with plastic book wrap? Trying to decide where best to put barcodes.
