Colby College Libraries used to remove the physical book covers and our
library made collages out of them (I delegated this to one of our student
assistants). It made for quite a striking display. But then, our technical
services department outsourced all our processing to a "shelf ready" system
with Yankee Books, so Yankee Books now plasticizes all the paper covers, and
we barcode the outside of the book, instead of the inside back cover.
Patrons like seeing and reading the covers when browsing our new books in
our new books display area. Margaret Ericson, Bixler Art and Music Library,

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Book jackets

We have recently had a discussion here about the use of book covers in the
library. I would be interested in knowing if you use and how you use book
jackets-i.e., if you use them for display of new art and architecture books,
do you retain covers on when placed back into the stacks as part of the
regular collection? Do you also cover with plastic book wrap? Trying to
decide where best to put barcodes.
