Message from the petition author, Organization for the Preservation of
the Arts Library:

---------------------------------

Thank you for your interest in the "Save the UCLA Arts Library"
petition. Thanks in part to the 3,962 people who voiced their opinions
and signed, the UCLA Arts Library has a reprieve. It will not be
closed during 2009-10. Gary Strong, UCLA University Librarian, is
working with the Deans of the College of Arts and Letters' Division of
Humanities, and those of the Schools of the Arts and Architecture and
Theater, Television and Film to keep the Arts Library open in its
current location and to explore, in Mr. Strong's words, "the
appropriate future for the collections and the services it deserves."
Alongside of this development, Mr. Strong is also in discussions with
a donor who has offered support to help keep this institution open in
the short term. These are encouraging developments; however, our
ultimate goal is to support the long term survival of this critical
cultural institution.

Since 1952, the Arts Library has served faculty, students and the
Southern California community as an essential cultural resource. In
terms of research and scholarship it supports some of the nation's
best programs in the arts, architecture, art history, film,
television, theater and the humanities. With over 270,000 volumes and
unique collections, the UCLA Arts Library is a singular institution in
Los Angeles, a burgeoning center for the arts. It must be preserved.
