Megan,

The type of library you would like to work in can, many times, dictate the
necessary certificates. University libraries, on average, prefer that you
have a second masters in a related field (MA in Art History, MFA, etc.).
Public, museum, and special libraries are on a case-by-case basis.

One way to get a good feel for the requirements and preferences for various
jobs is to follow job announcements. ARLIS-L is an excellent resource for
art librarian job postings as well as ARLIS/NA's special interest group,
ArLiSNAP (www.arlisnap.org <http://www.arlisnap.org/> )

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Hi, I am a new student in the field and had a few
questions about art librarianship

Hi I am a new student who is starting out in the field of library and
information science. I was just wondering what time of specific certificate
do you need to become an art librarian? Do you need to have your masters in
art history or something similar. Anyways, right now I am going for an
archive records management certificate and was wondering if that would be
sufficient for starting a career in this field. Thanks for your time!

Sincerely,

Megan
