Colleagues,
I am in search of an auction
sales catalog dated December, 1939, from the Coleman Auction Galleries. At
the suggestion of a colleague, I searched the NYT (PROQUEST) and found mention
of this sale in an article dated December 10, 1939. From that article,
I’ve deduced that the sale may have taken place the following Saturday, Dec.
16, 1939. The NYT item reads:
“On Saturday afternoon the
Coleman Auction Galleries, Inc., will offer a collection of paintings among
which are a number of American portraits and scenes. The catalogue lists
a portrait of Gen. Philip Van Cortlandt by Charles Wilson Peale, a portrait of
Timothy Pickering by Rembrandt Peale, a portrait of Gen. Robert Swartout by
Samuel F. B. Morse, a scene on Lake Champlain by A. H. Wyant, scenes at Mt.
Vernon by Eastman Johnson, a New York scene by Ernest Lawson, American genre
subjects and paintings by European artists.”
It is not listed in SCIPIO,
FirstSearch, or the union catalogs for MOMA, Brooklyn Museum, and The
Frick.
If you have it or have
suggestions for locating it, please email me off-list.
Thanks, all!
