Re: [ARLIS-L] Handbook and List of Members 2009 now availa
For those of you who do not want to spend $8 - $16 for a bound copy, it took me about 15 minutes to download the PDF, print it out, hole-punch it, and put it into a 3-ring binder. Not fancy, very manual, but it works just fine and I've been doing the same thing with my Visual Resources Assocation directory for a couple of years now as well (no, ARLIS/NA is not the only organization that no longer produces a hardcopy). A quick-and-dirty printout probably produces a smaller carbon footprint than a perfect bound copy that will get tossed in a year anyway. Ultimatley, it's just not that onerous a task, and it was serenely mindless.

Changing economic times call for different ways of doing things.

Yes, but we're too cheap.  You're supposed to print out your own and hold it together with staples, I guess--or never print it out at all--see archived correspondence from me, Wolfgang,

Why do we have to go outside the Society to get this?

The Society should provide this to Members!

Roger & the ARLIS/NA Comm & Pub team - great job!

For those who want to have a professionally-bound printed copy, Lulu.com offers the ability to print a black & white perfect bound copies for as low as $8 ($16 after media mail shipping in the US).  FedEx Office also provides online services that send your print job to the nearest FedEx Office location.  They have various binding options which would put the final cost around $13+tax.

Hi Roger:

I am so glad to have the new Directory before the conference.  Of course I
have printed it out.  But it is great to have it online too!  Thanks to all
who made this happen.

Dear Colleagues,

The Handbook and List of Members for 2009 is now available in the members'
area of the ARLIS/NA Web site. Members may login using the MemberClicks
username and password; click on the link "Download the 2009 Handbook."

For the first time, the handbook is being made available exclusively in
portable document format (PDF). Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to view,
search, and print the document. The latest version can be downloaded for
free at http://get.adobe.com/reader/.

The content and appearance follows the precedent set by earlier editions,
and contains administrative information, leadership and group rosters,
sponsorship and awards information, as well as alphabetical lists of
individual, institutional, and business affiliate members of record as of
March 16, 2009 (hence the new single-year designation). Member indexes by
institution and by geographic location conclude the document.

By offering the publication in this format, we are pleased to introduce
several useful viewing, navigating, and printing features. Using Acrobat
Reader, the viewer can save the entire document to an individual computer or
portable storage device, enlarge the text size for easier viewing, and
search in the "Find" window on the toolbar. Icons on the left allow the
viewer to see thumbnail images of individual pages (enlargeable under
"options") and go directly to a desired page; one may also use the table of
contents bookmarked for quick consultation of a particular section. Each
listing in the table of contents is also linked to the corresponding
section; just click on the line to jump to the first page of the section
chosen. Links to external Web sites are provided in the "Affiliated
Organizations" list on p. xi.
For those who may wish to do so, the entire document (or any portion of it)
may be printed for consultation offline.

Please note that the online membership directory and the society's Web site
will be the best sources for regularly updated information.

We hope you find the ARLIS/NA Handbook and List of Members for 2009 both
informative and easy to use, and we welcome your comments and suggestions
for future editions.
