Dear ARLIS-L,
This year we're teaching concept mapping as part of a required freshman art history library assignment. Art students are familiar with mapping in their studio classes. I’ve related concept mapping to library research as a way to formulate questions and develop vocabulary before undertaking searches in the databases and catalogs. My experience is that students are quite literal when searching. By visually mapping out the concept, students are asked to investigate facets of the topic as the initial stage of the research process. Here’s a link to the powerpoint tutorial students view before mapping their research topic.  http://www.risd.edu/pdf/conceptmapping.pps
