Spotlight on Sessions II - Hot Topics!

This is the second of four posts about conference sessions.

Without a doubt, one of the main benefits we gain by attending the annual
ARLIS/NA conference is learning more about current trends and ideas in the
field. This conference offers exceptional sessions on a variety of hot
topics such as diversity, copyright, new technologies, erotica in the
library, and more. This post highlights those sessions dealing with the
hottest library issues.

Reaching Out and Bringing In: Understanding and
Encouraging Diversity in the Library
Sat. April 18, 2:00 - 3:30 pm
This session will address how arts librarians can identify and reach out to
under-represented populations, understand their needs, and create effective
programs and services.

Women Artists and Technology: Strategies for
Capturing and Archiving the Cyber-Feminist Voice
Sat. April 18, 3:45 pm -5:15 pm
Web 2.0 technologies have empowered and given voice to communities
and allow those communities, though dispersed, to gather around modes of
thought. They also allow participants to express opinions anonymously and
strip expression of sexuality. This panel will explore this level of content
creation by women artists, who now have critical voices and collective
power.

The Future of Art Journals
Sun. April 19: 11:00 am - 12: 30 pm
As more journals come online, cancellations of the print version are
commonplace. Are art journals ready for that? Are readers of art journals
ready for that? Are the online journals complete and the images of high
quality?

Computerized Gaming in Libraries and the Academy: Collections
Development, Service Provision and Future Directions
Sun. April 19, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Putting the terms computerized gaming and academic pursuit in the
same sentence is perhaps a surprising combination, but represents an
exciting new reality in our professional lives. How can our collections
development policies and user services bring gaming into the academic world?
This session will present views from both academics and archivists.

Image Copyright in a Digital World
Sun. April 19, 2:00-3:30 pm
Understanding how copyright law affects both visual and textual materials is an ongoing
struggle. This session will address major aspects of copyright relating to
visual materials in the digital age. The panel will include representatives
from the creative arts, museum and academic communities.

Hot and Bothered: Erotica in Museum and Library Context
Sun. April 19, 3:45 - 5:15 pm
Erotica in both museum and library setting is a sensitive subject,
but one that many of us deal with in a public realm. What is the role of the
librarian in understanding and providing information and resources on
sexuality and culture? Panelists include representatives from the Kinsey
Institute, the Leather Archives and the Tom of Finland Foundation.
