This might help you to narrow down the date:

Notman had been making inroads into the American market since 1869 when he had received the contract to photograph the staff and students of Vassar College. He was a regular contributor to the influential Philadelphia Photographer, edited by Edward Wilson, an admirer of his work, who often featured Notman’s art, innovative methods, and Montreal studio. In 1876 Notman astutely joined Wilson in forming the Centennial Photographic Company to obtain the monopoly on photographs taken at the Philadelphia Centennial International Exhibition that year; the company, which employed Fraser as art superintendent, had a staff of 100 housed in a large building on the grounds. (Dictinary of Canadian Biography Online.)

I also see a reference to The Philadelphia Photographer, Vol. VI, Nos. 61-72 on a page that he, as well as a lot of other artists are on.  This may not be relevant.

If the publication is still in existence you might want to try getting in touch with them.  Also the local public library, the state archives, or a Philadelphia museum may have the info. you need.

Dear Collective Wisdom,

According to one of our graduate students, photographer William Notman wrote
(at least two) articles for the publication "Philadelphia
Photographer". The problem is that she has no idea when he published these,
and she cannot find the journal anywhere but the New York public library and
therefore cannot browse through them.

We are grateful for any ideas...

Many thanks,

Margaret
