Spotlight on Workshops

Now that you’ve booked your flight and arranged for a room, it’s time to plan your stay in Indianapolis. Conference workshops are a fantastic way to develop your professional skills and to network with librarians who are interested in the same things that interest you: whether you are a beginner, an expert, or somewhere in between.

This year there are a variety of workshops to choose from — we’ll whet your appetite here, but to get the details about them, go to the “Program by Type” listing at http://www.indiana.edu/~indycon/type.html

What’s being offered?

Mashups!
Who doesn’t want to learn about Mashups? In two quick hours you can be a Mashup star! This workshop is being offered twice: on Thursday (4/16: 3-5 pm) and on Tuesday (4/21: 9-11 am).

Type, Print Bind — a Hands-on Letterpress Workshop with Paul Brown
If making books is more your thing, learn from the best! Paul Brown will lead you through typing, printing and binding a small book. All supplies are included in the workshop fee! (Friday, 8 am-5 pm)

Creating Effective Resumes
For you newly-minted librarians or if you are among those looking for a new job or a promotion, sign up to revise and revamp that resume. It’s free! (Friday, 8 am-noon)

Decision Trees: Seeking the Right Path for Visual Resources Users
Move over sliced bread! A decision tree is a remarkable tool for both librarian and user — enabling each to delineate a path to the most appropriate resource. Using a decision tree to help navigate the complicated and confusing world of visual resources is ground breaking! And once you have the tool, you can use it for all sorts of other decision-making tasks. (Friday, 8 am-noon)

ARLIS/NA Career Mentoring Program
Learn how to be a mentor or a mentee (depending on where you are in your career), get paired up with an ARLIS/NA colleague, and participate in the Mentoring Program for the coming year. It’s a wonderful way to meet ARLIS/NA members, to learn from one another, and to contribute to the profession. (Friday, 12:30 pm-4:30 pm)

They Never Covered this in Library School: Cataloging Artists Books
Another timely workshop in our “They Never Covered This…” series addressing a pertinent topic and filling a skills gap that has widened with the burgeoning Artists’ Book market and responding growth in our library collections. (Friday, 1 pm-4 pm)

Sign up now for a workshop that interests you and teaches you new skills!

Best regards,
Rebecca Price and Annette Haines
