Spotlight on Tours

Did you know that Indianapolis, a city of approximately 800,000 and Indiana's largest city, is the only state capital that is exactly in the center of its state?  There's lots more to learn about Indianapolis!  While registering for the ARLIS/NA Conference, be sure to sign up for one or more of these exciting tours.  You won't be disappointed!

There's something for everyone with nine different tours featuring art, architecture, libraries, sport, history, and technology.  Two of the tours will be offered twice: on Friday and on Tuesday (there will be a drop-off at the airport on the way back Tuesday afternoon).  Sign up now and use this opportunity to get acquainted with Indianapolis and its environs.

 *   Bloomington Treasures
    *   What: Full-day tour of the Kinsey Institute, Lilly Library, Benton Murals, IU Art Museum, Information Commons / Wells Library, and the Fine Arts Library

    *   What: Full Day extended architectural guided tour of this small town mecca of World Class Modern Architecture

    *   What: Half-day walking tour of the Conseco Field house, Lucas Oil Stadium and Victory Field

 *   Kokomo Opalescent Glass Company Studio and Shop
    *   What: Half-day bus tour of Kokomo Opalescent Glass Company, the oldest continually operating glass company in America [172 years]. See Tiffany's Favrile Glass being made, a Hot Shop, and cathedral stained glass studio, as well as the gift shop.
    *   Where: Kokomo, IN
    *   When: Friday, 8:00am-12:00pm
    *   Cost: $50.00 per person


 *   Auto Design/ Indianapolis Motor Speedway
    *   What: Half-day guided tour of the internationally famous home of racing and automobile design. Includes the Speedway, Hall of Fame Museum, classic cars collection, and more. 2009 is the centennial of the Track. Transportation provided.
    *   Where: Indianapolis Motor Speedway
    *   When: Friday, 1:00-5:00pm
    *   Cost: $50.00 per person


 *   Decorative Arts at the Indiana State Museum
    *   What: Half-day walking tour of the Indiana State Museum  , including Indiana quilts, furniture, glass ceramics, as well as access to the galleries, 92 sculpture tour, conservation lab, L.S. Syres Tearoom/cafe and gift shop.

 *   High and Hot Technology at IUPUI
    *   What: Two-hour tour and demonstration of the IUPUI Informatics School IT Pervasive Technology Labs.  Access to secure areas and latest digital technology

    *   When: Thursday 3:00-5:00pm; Friday 3:00-5:00pm; Tuesday, 10:00am-12:00pm

 *   Historic Theaters in Indianapolis.  Guided by Historic Landmarks Foundation
    *   What: Two-hour bus tour of historic theaters in Indianapolis with guide from the Historic Landmarks foundation.  Includes interior tour of the Madam Walker Theater, with exterior architectural highlights of the Circle Theater, Indiana Repertory Theater, Murat Theater, and Athenaeum's American Cabaret Theater.
    *   Where: Downtown Indianapolis

 *   Indiana History Center
    *   What: Two-hour walking tour of the Indiana History Center including galleries, archives & library, conservation lab, history market, cafe, classrooms and theater, and storage.
    *   Where: Canal Walk, Indanapolis (walking distance from hotel)
    *   When: Tuesday, 10:00am-12:00pm
    *   Cost: $25.00 per person


 *   Other Interesting sights in Indy to consider: self guided tours will be available for those wishing to see on their own: Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, the world's largest Children's Museum, the Soldiers and Sailors  Monument on the Circle and the Eli Lilly Civil War Museum, the World War Memorial and Museum in University Park, the Cultural Trail of Indy Arts Districts, the new Central Library of the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library, the Historic City Market, President Benjamin Harrison Home, Lockerbie Square, Indianapolis Zoo and the Scottish Rite Cathedral (a Masonic building).  The State House and State Library are across Washington Street from the conference hotel and guided tours are free. The nearby IUPUI campus has a mix of public art- outdoor and in many campus buildings, including the Medical Center buildings, as well as a monorail to ride. Indy also has a number of smaller art galleries and museums.
